News, STARS & Storytelling – from John & the PHS Team! Friday 7th February 2025
Welcome to 91Ê×·¢ School's Whole School Blog!
Hi everyone,
Happy Friday to you! I hope you’ve had a good week, and not too cold. It’s been a nice week in school which, as you can see below, has been very very busy, with lots of fun & funky activities happening. Hopefully you can enjoy reading about them below and looking at the pictures! I can also very much recommend the Online Safety blog these this week, as well as the Graden Club – and an amazing haiku – done in science!
Related to that we had a procedure in school today that’s like a fire evacuation but is for something dangerous happening in the area, so it’s called an invacuation, where you stay inside and keep everyone safe in certain ways. We practised that and all the children were great. It’s horrible to even have to practise that sort of thing, but there are dangers around potentially, and so it’s good to be prepared. The students are great when we do these things
So please do have a read below and a lovely weekend – the first three sections on literacy, personal and physical development are really great today, and there are some lovely bits further on down too – the Wellbeing Connect Challenge is brilliant
All the best for a lovely warm weekend!

We have 3 Super-Steering Groups which deliver our Key Drivers through our curriculum. The Key Drivers are Communication, Wellbeing and Independence. The Groups are Literacy, Physical Development and Personal Development
Ìý
Literacy
Becky, our Literacy Lead, leads a team that improve all aspects of literacy, including this year a lot of handwriting and oracy (it’s OK, she’ll be going into explain all of that) as well as reading, phonics, books and all sorts!
National Storytelling Week
We have been celebrating National Storytelling Week this week, which has been a lovely excuse for some extra storytelling and all the good that comes with that! This blog post I’m going to hand over to Chris, Kristina/Philip & Beth to share what our students have been up to!
In 6CC we shared our favourite stories in class and then made a puppet theatre to create our own stories. We filmed these on the iPads and created stop-start animations of our stories
In 3KH this week we have been exploring storytelling and making the most of our imaginations to create some silly stories and play lots of different creative writing games. The students have been enjoyed thinking of lots of differentÌýadjectives,Ìýverbs,Ìýobjects,Ìýpeople, andÌýplacesÌýto complete a lot of funny ‘MadLib Stories’. From a story about buses featuringÌýDwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson shouting “That’s my boy!†to a Love Poem set inÌý‘MacDonald’s’ÌýwithÌý‘hearts dancing sleepily’
Pupils in the Engagement Pathway have really enjoyed National Storytelling Week. We chose and listened to our favourite books in the classroom, in the garden and even on the trampoline! We have enjoyed sensory stories which are a great way to bring stories to life, practise our fine motor skills and wake up all our senses. 6HF visited the library to read some new books. We have enjoyed interactive stories which also gives us opportunity to practise our sequencing and switching skills; and choosing our favourite characters to listen to audio books. On Monday in assembly we listened to Jack and The Beanstalk which is always really fun!
It’s been a busy week! Happy Storytelling!
Physical Development
Everything that is fabulous in the world of Physical Development! This includes physio, hydro, MOVE, PE, HI, VI, a lot of OT and all sorts of key areas for us, including all of the Outdoor Learning, John Muir Award and many other aspects. Steph oversees this and will ensure that an aspect is shared in the blog each week
Developing Balance Co-ordination, with Maikel!
In this week’s post-16 physiotherapy session we have worked on developing balance co-ordination! Students have been working hard to practise their stepping and jumping skills over hurdles and their speed and agility skills by stepping with accuracy and control through a floor ladder in a variety of ways – forwards, backwards and sideways
We also challenged them to try and maintain a Pilates “Tiger†pose under a parachute which helps to develop their strength, co-ordination and balance.
Look how much fun they’re having!
Personal Development
One of the best things about the school and one of the most important for our pupils, PD covers PSHE, Wellbeing, Careers, Social Moral Spiritual & Cultural, Online Safety, Behaviour and similar areas. Jo pulls it all together. Let’s see what Jo and the team have in store for us this week! The inspectors really loved all of the PD we do!
Lots of News!
SMSC
More from Chinese New Year!
In 2HR we have been looking at what Chinese New Year is and making lots of different crafts. We also made our own dragon dance whilst listening to the Chinese new year music!
Wellbeing
2LL have taken part in our school Resilience Day this week! We spent the morning in our Outdoor Learning area. We enjoyed exploring our favourite activities in the Outdoor Learning area, including making some noodles, playing hide and seek and pretending we were on a pirate ship! We then spent our afternoon taking part in the Engagement assembly. We loved listening to the songs and joining in with the dancing! We all loved the sensory lights too. We finished our day by thinking about what makes us amazing as individuals 😊. We have been able to recognise that we are all special in so many ways and we’ve been able to share what we are good at.
3TW have been working on coping with feelings. They began with thinking about a range of feelings and who they can speak to if they need help.
Pupils then went on to think about placing feelings on a scale and decided that some feelings are much stronger than others. They thought that they might need help to cope with strong feelings.
6LWC have been doing ‘Belly Breathing’ exercises to support their wellbeing for 5 minutes at the end of day before Taxi’s.
Student Santiago said ‘it really helps you feel calm after doing lots of work’
Wellbeing
Here are Andy and the Wellbeing Team about what’s happening this year in their brilliant Connect Challenge series! Go Andy!
This week’s Connect Challenge coincided with our school resilience day – “Time to Talkâ€. Pupils took part in activities designed to promote mindfulness and self-reflection. From mindful colouring sessions that allowed students to express their creativity to guided dance and yoga that helped clear their minds, every activity aimed to enhance emotional resilience and provided a break from the busy school day.Ìý
One of the highlights of the Connect Challenge was the dice & paper fortune teller activity, where classes came together for discussions based on the topics they landed on. This activity sparked conversations about personal experiences, likes and dislikes but also opened the floor to more serious discussions about mental health.Ìý
In the spirit of positivity, every pupil and staff member took part in a compliment exchange. Each person received a compliment from someone else in the school – a lovely reminder of the power of words and the impact they can have on our self-esteem and mental health. The compliments were collected along with pupils’ thoughts on the day and turned into an amazing display (outside The Hub) by the lovely Nat!
Meanwhile, pupils and staff in Chris’s class put together a ‘feelings board’. They checked in during morning registrations, throughout each day and again before home time. Staff modelled how feelings can change throughout the day, and reminded the class that it is normal to feel emotions from different Zones of Regulation; they were able to talk about why our feelings change throughout the day – this sounds like really good work!
‘Time to Talk’ day ended with an exciting online session with Virtual Soccer Schools, where students had the opportunity to meet Premier League footballer and England u18s captain, Josh King, and hear about his journey. He shared his own experiences with mental health and the challenges he faced on his path to becoming a professional athlete. The Fulham FC midfielder’s story resonated with our pupils, inspiring them to reflect on their own challenges and consider ways to build resilience in their lives.
Resilience Day
As Andy says above, there was another one of our Resilience days. We’re going to hear a little bit about it from Russell now. It sounds good!
The theme for this half-term’s Resilience Framework Day was ‘Time To Talk’
In Robins/4RR, we practised our speaking and listening skills by means of conversations about the games and puzzles that we enjoyed through the day.
We were able to name the pictures on our Lotto cards, describe the detail on the jigsaw scenes that we made and explain some of the rules of the games.
The class undertook all of this with impeccable manners and turn-taking skills. Everyone had a super day!
Behaviour for Learning (BfL)
Let’s hear from Aylisha about all the exciting work this team are doing
This week we have continued to deliver the 4thÌýsession of training to our Learning Support Assistants for BfL.Ìý We have also been busy delivering NAPPI training for our staff.Ìý NAPPI is Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention.Ìý This is a specific approach to managing challenging behaviour with an emphasis on Positive Behaviour Support.ÌýÌý
NAPPI UK is accredited by the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) and provides a framework for providers to assess, manage and prevent challenging behaviour
If you have any questions or you wish to know more about behaviour here in school, feel free to contact the Behaviour for Learning Team direct.
Preparation for Adulthood – PfA
PfA is a real priority for us, and Hannah and others do a huge amount of work on it. Let’s find out a bit more about what Hannah has been up to with this crucial area.
Parents of students on the Engagement Pathway were invited to attend a department coffee afternoon this week, and the area for discussion was on Preparation for Adulthood
As a school, we are focusing on really getting to grips with what ‘next steps’ look like for all of our students. It’s so important that we get this right for every child and young person, and we can only do that with your insight, so it was fantastic to be able to talk to parents about this over a cuppa. We were delighted to welcome Kasha and Mel from Hedleys College, who were able to tell us about Continuing Health Care assessments and why they could be important in helping our students to progress onto their next destination with as much support as possible. There are so many possibilities out there, and our aim is to help you to navigate through the (sometimes overwhelming) amounts of information available to ensure that your children get the very best transition into early adulthood and beyond.
Although this event was for Engagement families, we will be hosting more opportunities to chat about all things PfA over the coming months, so keep your eye on the calendar, and let us know if there is anything in particular that you would like to focus on. You can do that by contacting Hannah Fuller or Eileen Robinson at school.
Science/Poetry Crossover Lesson of the week, with Branagh!
This looks awesome! Let’s hear from Branagh about what the task was
In science we have been learning about states of matter and one of our jobs to do was create a Haiku which is a three lined poem with a syllable pattern of 5,7,5Ìý😊
Here are some that we came up with
Solids are rock hard,
Liquids can be quite runny,
Gases you can’t see
Ìý
Gas is cool like ice,
Solids are hot like lava,
Liquids are smooth tides
Ìý
Gases flammable,
Solids can be hard and soft,
Liquids are wet
Ìý
Matter is all here,
Solids, liquids and gases,
It makes up the world
Ìý
This was done by Kayden, Jayden and Taylor in 4HT/JF science group 11 – well done all, great stuff!
Early Years – The Ducklings!
Let’s get the latest update from what’s been happening down in the fabulous Early Years
In our Wonderful World topic this week we have been looking at light and dark
In Outdoor Learning we explored the outdoor area moving in and out of the trees. It was a windy day, so we watched the flags flying around in the trees. We haveÌýall enjoyed the dark tent and the lights, with the moon projected on the back. We mixed light and dark paints to make different colours. Roo enjoyed being in space, and there were lots of giggles as he watched the astronauts jumping around on his knee
We focused at lot on our interests this week. Amiee enjoyed gloop, adding different material to make different textures. Hey Duggie and friends joined us. George identified all of the characters and their features. Peppa and her family joined the class, and Hayden moved the characters around on the different scenes, they visited the beach and the school. We had lots of mini-beasts activities this week: Rowan matched the heads to their bodies then matched the plastic mini-beasts to their pictures correctly naming them all.
Another fun packed week with The Ducklings!
UNICEF Award update with Rebecca
We were recently awarded the Bronze level of this, and Rebecca and others are already working on the next level. We particularly like it because it puts the voice of the child at its centre. Let’s hear what’s been happening.
This week myself and our PD lead Jo Ferguson attended the training to ensure that we are on track to gain our Silver Award.ÌýWe worked with lots of other professionals to look at how we can ensure that our school population is aware of their rights and that our parents and governors are also aware of our journey through the award.
We looked at lots of different ideas for displays and charters throughout school and we are really excited to get started with this.
This week’s article of focus is Article 4: Governments must ensure that children’s rights are respected.
For this right to be achieved:
- Governments need to do everything in their power to respect children’s rights. They should make sure that they provide the most money they can to make that happen.
- Governments should make sure that children and young people know what their rights are.
- Governments should help adults understand how to respect these rights.
- When governments are reporting back the United Nations about what they have done to respect children’s human rights, they should make sure that these reports are available to everyone, including children and young people.
Garden Club with Ben!
The Ground Force team have great fun and do really good work. Let’s get an update from Ben there and then have a look at some pictures.
91Ê×·¢ Ground Force team are hard at it again!
This week we have cut the hedges back put fresh soil in the flower beds, and had a good old-fashioned tidy up.
As you can see from the pictures it all got a little bit too much for some of the staff 🤣🤣
Sports News of the Week with Nathan!
OK, what have those PE guys been up to? Let’s get the latest from Nathan! It’s about dance & movement!
In PE Engagement Pathway KS5 class this term we have been working on skills around dance and movement
Here is a lovely picture of one of Ameen showing off his dance moves and having fun at the same time and over the next coming weeks we will continue to see our students enjoy some of their favourite music and express their movements to dance.
